As I was driving throughout Bedford County, I noticed a lot of signs for covered bridges. I had planned on visiting a few of them because there were letterboxes at them but I also made a few unscheduled stops when I passed interesting looking signs. This was the first one that I saw early on my first morning. It is the Jackson Mill bridge which spans the Brush Creek.
I moved on to the real reason that I was in this particular area. A letterbox was supposed to be located in Felten's Mill bridge but I have written before about this bridge and the missing box. I know that I posted this picture before but I did want to add my official postcard for this bridge along with my own picture of it. This bridge is very badly in need of some TLC and although picturesque was still a sad sight.
I was meandering through the county when I saw this sign and decided to see this bridge also. However, because the bridge was not what I expected to see, I actually drove right past it and had to retrace my steps to find it.
According to the article that I read later on this bridge, it has been allowed to weather naturally. I am not sure if that was intentional or just lack of maintenance for whomever owns the bridge.
There are 14 covered bridges in Bedford County.
The next bridge that I photographed was a totally different story, well maintained and very pretty in the sunlight. And even better yet, there was a letterbox here.
This is the corresponding postcard for this bridge. I think that my picture is prettier than the card.
The last bridge in my photo album, Hall's Mill, was also the home of a letterbox. I am really surprised that this box has lasted. It has been there for a almost two years and is very near the water. With all of the rain and snow and flooding that Pennsylvania has had in that time period, one would think that it might have been washed away. But it is there and in good shape, having been found only three or four times.
I had picked up this postcard in Bedford but this was not a bridge that I saw on this trip. Maybe next time!
